Worry: Learning to Trust the Father With Tomorrow

Worry: Learning to Trust the Father With Tomorrow

Lately, God has been teaching me something that I thought I already knew:

He will take care of us.

I have preached about faith. I have encouraged other people to trust God. I have stood before congregations and told people that God is faithful, that He provides, that He opens doors, and that He makes a way.

But there is a difference between preaching about trusting God and actually having to trust Him.

There are seasons when you do not know exactly what is going to happen next.

You start thinking about your family.

Your finances.

Your future.

Your responsibilities.

The doors you are praying will open.

The decisions you have made.

The things you cannot control.

And before you realize it, you are carrying tomorrow while still trying to live today.

I have been learning that God never asked me to do that.

God Has Been Teaching Me Not to Worry

Jesus said:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
— Matthew 6:34

Those words have been speaking differently to me lately.

Jesus does not pretend that tomorrow will have no difficulties. He acknowledges that every day carries its own challenges. But He teaches us not to take tomorrow's burdens and place them on today's shoulders.

That is exactly what worry does.

Worry tries to make me solve situations that have not happened yet.

It makes me have conversations in my head that may never happen.

It makes me calculate outcomes I cannot control.

It makes me ask:

What if this doesn't work?

What if the money doesn't come?

What if the opportunity doesn't open?

What if I made the wrong decision?

What if something happens to my family?

And God keeps reminding me:

Christopher, tomorrow is Mine.

You have today.

Walk with Me today.

Obey Me today.

Love your family today.

Preach the Gospel today.

Be faithful today.

And trust Me with tomorrow.

I'm Learning This as a Father

Being a father has taught me something about God.

My son does not wake up every morning worrying about whether there will be food in the refrigerator.

He does not sit down calculating the household budget.

He does not wonder whether the lights will stay on.

He does not ask himself whether everything will somehow work out.

Why?

Because he has a father and a mother.

He trusts that we are going to take care of him.

That doesn't mean he understands everything we are doing.

It doesn't mean he knows how every need will be met.

He simply knows that he is loved.

And sometimes I feel like God looks at me the same way.

I can imagine Him saying:

You are carrying things I never asked you to carry.

Jesus points us toward the birds and reminds us that our heavenly Father feeds them. He points toward the flowers and reminds us that God clothes them. Then He asks us to remember how much more valuable we are to Him.

The answer to worry is not knowing every detail about the future.

The answer is knowing the Father.

My son doesn't need to know everything I know.

He needs to know me.

And I am learning that I don't have to know everything God knows.

I just need to know Him.

I'm Learning This as a Husband

Marriage has also changed the way I think about faith.

As a husband, I naturally want to provide.

I want my wife to feel secure.

I want my family to be protected.

I want to build something meaningful.

I want to make wise decisions.

I want things to work.

And sometimes that desire to provide can quietly become the belief that everything depends on me.

But it doesn't.

I have a responsibility to work.

I have a responsibility to plan.

I have a responsibility to make wise choices.

But I am not God.

There are doors only God can open.

There are opportunities only God can create.

There are resources only God can provide.

There are situations only God can change.

So as a husband, faith means doing everything God has asked me to do while refusing to carry the responsibilities that belong to Him.

I want my wife to see a husband who works hard, plans wisely and dreams boldly—but also a husband who knows how to pray.

A husband who knows how to say:

“I don't know how this is going to work, but I know God is going to take care of us.”

I'm Learning This as a Preacher

This lesson becomes even more personal because I preach the Gospel.

How can I tell others to trust God while secretly believing that my future depends completely on me?

How can I preach:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding…”

while spending every night leaning on my own understanding?

God has been teaching me that faith cannot simply be something I preach.

It has to become something I live.

There are moments in ministry when you know exactly what God has called you to do, but you do not know exactly how He is going to make it happen.

That is where faith becomes real.

I believe God has placed dreams in my heart.

I believe He has called me to preach.

I believe He has called me to serve.

I believe He has called me to reach people with the Gospel.

But calling does not mean I will always receive the entire roadmap.

Sometimes God gives you enough light for the next step.

And then He asks:

Will you walk with Me?

Worry Cannot Add Anything to My Life

Jesus asked a powerful question:

“Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?”

In other words:

What has worry ever accomplished?

Worry has never paid a bill.

Worry has never opened a door.

Worry has never changed tomorrow.

Worry has never added another hour to my life.

It only steals peace from today.

And that has convicted me.

How much of today's joy have I sacrificed because I was thinking about tomorrow?

How many moments with my wife have I mentally missed because I was somewhere else in my head?

How many moments with my son have I almost overlooked because my mind was occupied with the future?

How many times have I been physically present but mentally somewhere else?

God has been teaching me:

Be here.

Your family is here.

Your assignment is here.

Your opportunity to love is here.

Your opportunity to serve is here.

Tomorrow will arrive when tomorrow arrives.

Seek First

Jesus gives us something to do with our minds.

He doesn't simply say:

“Stop worrying.”

He says:

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
— Matthew 6:33

The answer to a mind consumed with worry is a mind redirected toward God.

Seek Him.

Seek His Kingdom.

Seek His righteousness.

Seek His will.

Seek His presence.

Seek His purpose.

And trust Him with everything else.

That has been becoming a prayer for me:

Lord, don't let me become so consumed with building my life that I forget Your Kingdom.

Don't let me become so focused on provision that I forget the Provider.

Don't let me become so obsessed with the future that I miss what You are doing today.

Cast It on Him

One of my favorite promises is 1 Peter 5:7:

“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”

I love the simplicity of that verse.

God does not say:

“Give Me the things you don't know how to handle.”

He says:

All your care.

The financial concern.

The family concern.

The career concern.

The ministry concern.

The uncertainty.

The unanswered prayer.

The thing that keeps running through your mind.

Give it to Him.

Why?

Because He cares for you.

The material I was reading made a beautiful point from this passage: God is not merely aware that we exist. The things that trouble us personally matter to Him because He relates to us as Father.

That changes everything.

I am not throwing my worries into empty space.

I am giving them to Someone who loves me.

All Things Work Together for Good

One of the promises I keep returning to is Romans 8:28:

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

Notice that the Bible does not say that everything will feel good.

It doesn't say everything that happens will be good.

It says God can make all things work together for good.

That means even the chapters I don't understand are still in His hands.

The closed door.

The unexpected change.

The delay.

The disappointment.

The transition.

The uncertainty.

God can weave all of it together.

And I truly believe that.

I believe that if I love God and surrender myself to His purpose, nothing is wasted.

There are things happening today that may only make sense five years from now.

But God sees the entire picture.

I only see the page I am standing on.

Love, Not Fear

As a father, I want to walk in love.

As a husband, I want to walk in love.

As a preacher, I want to walk in love.

And love requires faith.

Fear constantly asks:

“What if something goes wrong?”

Faith asks:

“Even if something goes wrong, will God still be with me?”

And the answer is yes.

Maybe that is what God has been teaching me most.

God has never promised me that I would understand every season.

He has never promised that every plan would unfold exactly the way I imagined.

He has never promised that following Him would mean there would never be storms.

But He has promised His presence.

The same Jesus who told us not to worry also reminded us that our heavenly Father knows what we need.

I don't know everything that tomorrow holds.

But I know who is already there.

And I am learning that knowing Him is enough.

So today I choose faith.

Today I choose love.

Today I choose to be present with my wife and my son.

Today I choose to preach the Gospel.

Today I choose to follow the calling God has placed on my life.

Today I will work.

Today I will pray.

Today I will trust.

And tomorrow?

Tomorrow belongs to my Father.

He loves me.

He loves my family.

He knows what we need.

And He will take care of us.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”

— Proverbs 3:5–6

Prayer request: Lord place your Holy Spirit in me to Trust you more

Lord help me daily through the power of the Holy Spirit to grow in Love and Peace
